Balkhausen is a district of the Seeheim-Jugenheim community in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse .

Geographical location

Balkhausen is located in the Vorderen Odenwald in southern Hesse in the depression between the Melibokus massif in the west and the Felsberg massif in the east. The district encompasses the headwaters of the Quaddelbach (partly also called Quattelbach ), which leads in a northerly direction down the valley to Jugenheim , where it joins the Stettbach to the Landbach . The southern boundary follows the ridge that connects the two mountain ranges with a saddle height of around 285 meters. The southern outskirts are a few hundred meters away from this transition to the Mühltal , through which one reaches south along the Mühlbach via Hochstädten to Auerbach , which is a district of Bensheim on the Bergstrasse and on the eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Plain . Following the Quaddelbach up the valley to the east, you come either to the Felsenmeer or over the Kuralpe at the Staffeler Kreuz down to Staffel and on to Modautal .

To the east of the village towards Schmal-Beerbach lies the Quattelbach settlement , which was first documented as a hamlet in 1377 and has always been part of the Balkhausen district.

history

The first mention of the place known to this day comes from the year 1357. It is a document that was drawn up at Bickenbach Castle (today Alsbach Castle ) about the truce there. This also mentions lands in Balkhusen . In later documents Balkhausen is mentioned under the place names Balkhusen (1357), Blaghuss (1380-1388), Walkhosen and Balkhusen (1415), Balkhusen (1451), Balckhusen (1496) and Balckhausen (1553).

The Balkhausen Church is mentioned in the middle of the 14th century. It was always a branch church of Jugenheim. In 1571 Balkhausen was administered by the Auerbach Office and in 1621 by the Seeheim-Tannenberg Office.

After the Thirty Years' War , Balkhausen was completely extinct. Only in 1648 is there a resident in the chronicles, moved from the area. Only in 1660 there were 27 inhabitants again.

In the 18th century the structure of the place consolidates; one builds along the natural line of the stream, the Quaddelbach. A so-called Waldhufendorf is slowly emerging .

In 1714 the county of Erbach , which ruled over the Odenwald area for 500 years, was forced to sell Balkhausen as an accessory to the Seeheim-Tannenberg office to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt due to financial difficulties . It then remained in Hesse and its predecessor states to this day.

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Balkhausen in 1829:

“Balkhausen (L. Bez. Bensheim) Lutheran Filialdorf; is 2 St. from Bensheim, and including Quatelbach has 37 houses and 274 inhabitants, all of which are Lutheran with the exception of 1 Catholic. The village belonged to the Daxberg Castle and was bought by Hesse from Erbach in 1714. "

Territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Balkhausen was incorporated into the municipality of Jugenheim ad Bergstrasse on December 31, 1971 on a voluntary basis . On December 31, 1977, the municipalities Seeheim and Jugenheim were then merged to Seeheim powerful state law together . Since January 1, 1978, the municipality has been officially called Seeheim-Jugenheim . For the district of Balkhausen, a local district with a local advisory board and mayor was set up in accordance with the Hessian municipal code.
