Albrecht Ohly

Albrecht Ohly (born December 27, 1829 in Buchenau (Lahn) , † December 20, 1891 in Darmstadt ; full name: Hans Friedrich Christian Carl Albrecht Ohly ) was a German lawyer and local politician . From 1874 to 1891 he was the first full-time mayor of Darmstadt.

Life

Albrecht Ohly was a son of the pastor (Johann) Heinrich Ohly (1796–1862) and his wife Friederike Ohly nee. Freybe (1800-1852). He was a Protestant and remained single all his life.

Ohly attended high school in Giessen and then studied law . After completing his legal traineeship , he became an attorney at the Grand Ducal Hessian Court in Darmstadt in 1862 . In 1871 he joined Darmstadt's municipal council. Ohly, who is said to have been a gifted speaker, represented national liberal ideas and campaigned for a democratic empire under Prussian leadership.

In 1874 he was elected mayor of Darmstadt with 17 out of 18 votes. In 1879 he was appointed Lord Mayor by Grand Duke Ludwig IV . From 1886 he was mayor for life. During Ohly's term of office, significant developments in the city of Darmstadt took place, especially in the area of infrastructure such as the water supply , sewerage , trams , the construction of various school buildings and the construction of a facility for neglected children.

From 1870 he was director of the Volksbank Darmstadt . He held this position until 1884.

Ohly was a co-founder of the Odenwald Club, founded in 1882 .

In the intensive discussion about the closure of the Technical University of Darmstadt , which took place in the Hessian state parliament in 1881/82, Ohly appeared as an advocate for the preservation of the university. On his initiative, the city agreed to subsidize the establishment of the first chair in electrical engineering , to which Erasmus Kittler was appointed.

From 1884 until his death in 1891 Ohly was a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse for the constituency of the city of Darmstadt . Arnold Bergsträsser was his successor in the state parliament .

Honors

The former Graefenhausen Castle , the Ohlystift in Graefenhausen and the Ohly Tower on the Felsberg in the Odenwald were named after him. In 1894 a tomb was erected for him in the old cemetery , designed by Friedrich Christoph Hausmann (grave site: III Mauer 77).
