Ludwig Engel

Ludwig Engel (born November 30, 1906 in Darmstadt ; † September 26, 1975 there ) was a member of the SPD and long-time Lord Mayor of Darmstadt.

Life

Engel attended the Realgymnasium in Darmstadt from 1913 to 1925 . He passed the Abitur and studied law and political science at the universities of Heidelberg , Munich , Berlin and Frankfurt am Main from 1925 to 1929 . In 1929 he passed his trainee examination and received his doctorate in 1932. jur. He then became a research assistant at the Hessische Landeshypothekenbank in Darmstadt and worked for several lawyers. Then he was a court assessor in the Hessian judicial service. In October 1933 the Social Democrat was dismissed from the judiciary by the National Socialists because of " political unreliability ". He then worked as a lawyer in Darmstadt together with Ludwig Metzger . In January 1943, Engel was called up for military service. At the end of the Second World War he was taken prisoner of war and was released from this in 1946.

After his release he settled in Darmstadt in August 1946 as a lawyer and notary. In October 1948 he became Vice President of the Hessian State Court and in 1949 President of the Senate of the Higher Regional Court. In January 1951 he was elected to the mayor's office as the successor to Ludwig Metzger. After two re-elections, he held this office for almost 20 years until his retirement in January 1971.

From 1958 to 1960 he was a member of the constituency of Darmstadt I in the Hessian state parliament .

During his long term in office, Engel helped shape the reconstruction of Darmstadt, which was largely destroyed in the night of the fire on September 11, 1944. He succeeded in rebuilding the economy with companies from the "smokeless industry" and the settlement of numerous research institutions. In addition, he supported the expansion of various educational institutions, in particular the TH Darmstadt, initially in the former old town and in the 1960s at the Lichtwiese location.

As President of the German Section in the Council of European Communities, he was involved in European politics and is considered to be the founder of the long tradition of Darmstadt city ​​partnerships . During his term of office, partnerships with Alkmaar ( Netherlands ), Troyes ( France ), Chesterfield ( England ), Graz ( Austria ), Trondheim ( Norway ) and Bursa ( Turkey ) fall .

Ludwig Engel was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: III H 186).
