The Freiherr vom Stein plaque can be awarded to municipalities and cities that can look back on at least 750 years of existence and want to celebrate the historical event in a festive setting (the anniversary number must be divisible by 25). As of July 29, 2013, 84 Hessian municipalities can still receive this honor. The details and requirements for awarding the Freiherr vom Stein plaque to municipalities and cities are regulated by the decree of the Hessian Minister of the Interior of October 23, 2006.

In addition to the awarding of the Freiherr-vom-Stein plaque to communities, which takes place only once, the Freiherr-vom-Stein certificate of honor can be awarded to their individual districts on the occasion of a corresponding anniversary.
