August Franke (politician)

August Franke (born February 14, 1920 in Haldorf ; † October 21, 1997 ) was a Hessian politician ( SPD ). He was district administrator and member of the Hessian state parliament .

education and profession

Franke, the son of a bricklayer , did an apprenticeship as bricklayer after elementary school like his brothers and then continued his education with distance learning and evening courses. From 1937 to 1940 he attended the Higher Technical State College for Civil Engineering in Kassel , which he completed in August 1940 with an examination as a structural engineer. On August 16, 1940, he began his work in the construction department of the country's peasantry Kurhessen, but was already on the 3 October 1940 Wehrmacht convened. After being severely wounded, he was released from the army in December 1942 and returned to the rural peasantry. There he was appointed head of the construction department in June 1945 and on January 1, 1951, he was appointed building officer. On October 1, 1956, he moved to the "Hessische Heimstätte" settlement company in Kassel as managing director . He held this position until 1960.

politics

Franke was a member of the SPD, where he was a member of the North Hesse district council and the agricultural committee of the federal executive committee. From April 1, 1946 to 1960, he was honorary mayor of his home town of Haldorf (now part of Edermünde ). During his tenure there, he built the first village community center in Hesse. Since 1946 he was also a member of the Fritzlar-Homberg district council . From December 1, 1954 to November 30, 1970 Franke was a member of the Hessian state parliament . On July 1, 1960 he became district administrator of the Fritzlar-Homberg district. After the regional reform in Hesse , he was commissioned from January 1, 1974 to carry out the duties of the district administrator of the newly formed Schwalm-Eder district . On June 4, 1974 he was officially elected district administrator of the Schwalm-Eder district. He held this office until November 10, 1984. In 1954, 1959, 1964 and 1969 he was a member of the Federal Assembly .

Honors

In 1980 August Franke received the Freiherr vom Stein plaque and the 1980 Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to the Schwalm-Eder district . The observation tower on the Knüllköpfchen is named August-Franke-Turm in his honor .

family

Franke was married and the father of three children. His son Edgar Franke was mayor of Gudensberg for many years and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 .
