Werner Schmid (entrepreneur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner Schmid (born September 13, 1918 in Leipzig ; † January 21, 2002 in Fulda ) was an entrepreneur and politician in Fulda and played a key role in shaping the post-war period there. In 1946 he founded Werner Schmid GmbH, which is still a family business today, producing precision components made of plastic and metal for automotive and ventilation technology as well as measurement and control technology.

In addition, he was CDU parliamentary group leader for many years and from 1977 to 1985 mayor of the city of Fulda. For his commitment, he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit , the Freiherr vom Stein plaque and as an honorary citizen of the city of Fulda. After his death, Werner-Schmid-Straße in Fulda was named after him.

Entrepreneurial career

In 1945 the destitute Leipziger moved to Fulda. He founded a metal processing company and began the first repair work on destroyed apartments in May 1946. In October 1946 Werner Schmid put the first machine into operation and manufactured simple metal parts such as furniture fittings, frame parts, door and window fittings and ashtrays from materials from scrapyards. Cooking pots were also made - from old steel helmets.

In 1953 the company moved into its first own premises and developed into a stamping plant with its own toolmaking facility . In 1963 the company moved to its current location on Weichselstrasse.

The establishment of a plastics production facility began in the 1970s. The rare combination of metal and plastic production under one roof enabled the company to specialize in the metal-plastic hybrid connections that are in great demand today . In 1974 Werner Schmid's daughter, Monika Hauß-Schmid, joined the company and in 1979 became a member of the management with her husband Wolf-Dieter Hauß.

In 1995 Werner Schmid left the operative business. In 2006 a street in Fulda was named after him.

Political career

Werner Schmid was active in local politics in Fulda for over four decades and was an important point of contact for three mayors. For many years he was CDU parliamentary group leader and from 1977 to 1985 mayor of the city council .
