Johann Michael Hofmann (* 1757 ; † 1841 ) was a German local politician , member of the government and mayor .

Life

Johann Michael Hofmann was a full-time flour trader. He was also a flour scales inspector and councilor.

The first parliamentary election in Hesse took place on April 18, 1820. In this election, the senior councilor Hofmann received the most votes.

In 1821 a mayoral election took place in Darmstadt. In this election, the conservative former Senator Hofmann was able to unite more than half of all votes cast. Hofmann was thus the first elected mayor of Darmstadt.

In 1824 Hofmann was confirmed in the mayor's office.

In 1831 Hofmann was confirmed again in office; although he got fewer votes than the candidate Ernst Emil Hoffmann in the mayoral election. The government's right of choice made this possible.

In 1833 Hofmann renounced the mayor's office. Then he held the more lucrative tax collector position.

One of his achievements was above all the reorganization of the Darmstadt school system. This reorganization was based on the "General School Regulations for the Grand Duchy of Hesse" issued in 1827.

In 1828 the previously independent city and free schools were merged into a uniform city school system. In 1832, after the union with the Reformed, their schooling was also incorporated into the city school system.

Johann Michael Hofmann died in 1841.
