Walter Hoffmann (born October 28, 1952 in Mengeringhausen ) is an SPD politician and was Lord Mayor of Darmstadt from June 2005 to June 2011 .

After graduating from high school and completing his military service, Hoffmann studied from 1973 to 1977 at the Kassel University and graduated with a teaching post for middle and high school. From 1978 to 1979 he initially worked for VW at the Baunatal plant , then until 1980 at the Academy for Work in Frankfurt. He rose within the DGB to chairman of the Starkenburg district. In 1971 he joined the SPD, for which he was chairman of the Friedberg local association from 1989. In 1998 he was directly elected to the Bundestag as a member of the constituency of Darmstadt . In the 2002 election he successfully defended his direct mandate.

In 2005 he took part in the mayoral election in Darmstadt. In the runoff election on March 20, he achieved 55.4%, triumphing over the CDU candidate Wolfgang Gehrke and replacing his party colleague Peter Benz in office. At the same time he left the Bundestag. The then Federal Minister of Justice, Brigitte Zypries, took over Hoffmann's direct mandate after the 2005 federal election.

On April 10, 2011, he was defeated by 30.9% of the votes in the runoff election for mayor against his challenger Jochen Partsch (GREEN).
