The Beerfurther Schlösschen is the ruin of a medieval tower castle in a spur above Beerfurth , a district of Reichelsheim in the Odenwald , a municipality in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse .

Geographical location

The remains of the facility are located east of Kirch-Beerfurth at an altitude of 363.4  m above sea level. NHN near the Gasthaus Vierstöck , which is about 500 m further east-southeast. The mountain spur with a view of the Gersprenztal is now wooded and the north-western end of the Burgberg (404 m above sea level) in the crystalline or Vorderen Odenwald (natural area 145.9 Böllstein- Odenwald ).

history

There are no written sources about the history of the Beerfurther Schlösschen. The first documentary mention comes from the year 1740, when Beerfurther citizens transported stones there for the construction of a school house. This was forbidden by the Erbach government , apparently with little success. A hand sketch of the district Kirch-Beerfurth from the years 1853-57 shows the building with an unusual, multiple cantilevered floor plan and considerably oversized. It bears the name Kirchbeerfurther Schloß there , but this was apparently deleted shortly afterwards. Excavations only took place in 1887 under Eduard Anthes . Only a few finds were recovered, which is why it is assumed that the complex remained unfinished.

The dating of the castle complex is therefore also uncertain. Due to the way it was built, it could be a predecessor to the nearby Reichenberg Castle , which was built around 1200. Until the acquisition of the allodial territory in the upper Gersprenztal by the Counts of Erbach at the beginning of the 13th century, the property was fragmented. The builders can possibly be found in previous owners, such as the Lords of Crumbach .

investment

A few ditches and ramparts are still visible from the castle and a few wall sections of a curtain wall to the northwest . A square tower with a side length of 14 m and about 2 m thick walls formed the core of the complex . The circular wall ran around the tower at a distance of about 5 m to the south, east and north and about 10 m to the west, of which some infill masonry with remains of the inner wall shell made of small blocks has been preserved and secured.

Beyond the neck ditch to the east (from south to northeast) , which secured the castle against the mountain, and which was preceded by a second, now almost filled, neck ditch about seven meters further east, E. Anthes was able to prove parts of the outer bailey. Only faint traces of it can be seen in the terrain.

Parallel to the hiking trail (No. 7 in the white circle), which, as an extension of Kirchstrasse and continuing on circular hiking trail 5 from the direction of Beerfurth, marks today's entrance to the Burgstall , three parallel walls and ditches can still be clearly seen parallel to the castle and the course of the spur. which should probably serve to protect the southern side of the Bachtal to the Gersprenztal .
