Güttersbach Castle

The castle Güttersbach is an Outbound Wasserburg in a sump area above the mouth of Mösselbachs in Güttersbach on the outskirts of the district Güttersbach the town of Mossautal in the Odenwald in southern Hesse .

The previously forgotten castle was rediscovered in 1949 during drainage work. The rulership of the castle is attributed to the Erbach taverns , as it was on their closed territory. The castle was built either as early as the 11th century when the Odenwald was settled, which would contradict the humpback block finds that were not used in the area until the end of the 12th century, or in the 13th century in connection with the medieval mining industry and was probably one Successor castle to Waldau Castle in the neighboring village of Wahlen . Since there are no documents about the castle, it probably remained unfinished or was given up again after a very short time.

The excavations of 1949, which were initially only intended to remove disturbing stones, point to a very concentrated rectangle with two square corner towers , each with a side length of six meters, and corner bosses . It is unclear whether the castle had a bailey . The four corner towers assumed by the excavators could not be confirmed by a modern aerial photo, only the two corner towers could be confirmed.

The former castle grounds are used as pasture and are not accessible.
