Harfenburg

The Harfenburg is the ruin of a high medieval hill castle above Heddesbach in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg .

location

The ruin is 315 meters above sea level on a spur of the Schloßbuckels in the Odenwald above the valley of the Laxbach . From Heddesbach, about a kilometer south in the valley, a ravine leads to the ruin.

history

The von Harfenberg family is named after the Harfenburg . A bligger from Harpfenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1200. It is certain that he belonged to the Steinacher family. Together with Hundheim Castle , located near Neckarhausen in the south, the Harfenburg is the oldest castle in the southern Odenwald. It was probably created in the 12th century and, as the headquarters of the Harfenberger, ruled the villages of Heddesbach, Brombach and Langenthal .

With the decline of the Harfenbergs, the castle fell to the Electoral Palatinate around 1300 , which it pledged to the Lords of Hirschhorn in 1314 . In 1340 Engelhard von Hirschhorn was asked by the Count Palatine to repair the "great damage" he had done to the castle. It is not clear whether this happened. From the 15th century the castle is only mentioned as a field name. Finds from the archaeological excavation carried out by the State Monuments Office in 1963/64 date mainly to the 13th century. The community coat of arms of Heddesbach, designed in the 20th century, alludes with the harp to the old coat of arms of the Harfenberg and Steinacher family.

investment

Only sparse remains of the Harfenburg have survived. The artificial formation of the area is clearly evident. The core castle , which is now covered with trees, has a floor plan of around 30 by 20 meters. Towards the slope there is a rubble mound of a tower. The main castle is surrounded by a moat . Two further trenches secure access to the mountain range.
