The Ulfenbach in the Grasellenbach district of Wahlen am Burgstall Waldau

The Ulfenbach is a river in Odenwald in southern Hesse and Baden-Wuerttemberg , which after about a southern course of about 29 km in length in Hirschhorn with his left Finkenbach for Laxbach combines that in there soon Neckar flows.

Surname

The names Ulfenbach and Laxbach are used in a rather unsteady and downright confusing way from different quarters. Today's survey maps show the name Laxbach , alternatively (in brackets) to Ulfenbach or alone, still far up over the point of confluence with the Finkenbach ulfenbach up to about Affolterbach, but very inconsistent with each other. Similar to the Internet publications of the Hessian State Office for Environment and Geology.

On a "parcel map of the Hirschhorn district" from 1846, the "Laxebach" only begins with the confluence of the Ulfenbach and Finkenbach near Hirschhorn. Locals follow the same usage.

On the upper reaches two large spring branches come together at Wahlen, a north-westerly, longer and more water-bearing one from Hammelbach, and a north-westerly coming from the Grasellenbach sawmill. This northern branch is also sometimes named as Ulfenbach.

geography

course

The Ulfenbach rises in the Odenwald near the Hammelbach district of the Grasellenbach community at around 500  m above sea level. NHN not far from the Weschnitz spring and runs mainly to the south through the Ulfenbachtal that begins there, one of several large valleys in the north-south direction of the rear Odenwald.

The Ulfenbach flows through or touches one after the other the villages Hammelbach, Scharbach, Wahlen (all communities Grasellenbach), Affolterbach , Aschbach , Wald-Michelbach, Ober-Schönmattenwag and Unter-Schönmattenwag (all communities Wald-Michelbach ), then joins the Hessian district Bergstrasse in one small arc to the west briefly in the Baden-Württemberg Rhine-Neckar district , where it flows through the town and community Heddesbach , from now on reaches the area of the town of Hirschhorn with the town of Langenthal again in the Bergstrasse district and finally Hirschhorn itself. He flows here after 29 kilometers with the Finkenbach at about ( 130  m above sea level ) to the Laxbach , which already flows about 700 m further down into the Neckar.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Ulfenbach covers about 96 km² and has the shape of a narrow, gently meandering tube that is 5.5 to 2.5 km wide, narrowing towards the south. In the northeast the watershed runs to the Mümling tributaries, east to the Finkenbach and its tributaries, in the south mostly to the Neckar itself, in the southwest and west to the Steinach and its tributaries, in the northwest and north to the Weschnitz system.

Tributaries

The first major left tributary at elections coming from grass-Ellenbach is performed in official works as the true headwaters of Ulfenbach, although he is known as the springing at Hammelbach and the same works a few hundred meters shorter Hammelbach called watercourse.

The other larger Ulfenbach tributaries are from the right the Michelbach / Gadener Bach in Wald-Michelbach , which shortly before absorbed the Gritzenbach , from the left the Dürr-Ellenbach near Oberschönmattenwag, and finally from the right the Holmbach shortly before the crossing of the Ulfenbach to Heddesbacher District.

Valley landscape

The Ulfenbachtal is deeply cut in the lower reaches, in the lowest from Langenthal it is even formed as a narrow Kerbtal. The slopes are mostly overgrown with forest. In the upper reaches, on the other hand, there are sections with a wide valley floor and wide open fields up the flat side slopes. Almost the entire length of a road follows the stream (L 3345, from Wahlen L 3105); Because of the steep relief of the landscape, the north-south valleys of the Odenwald, which run almost parallel to each other towards the Neckar, are preferred access axes. Together with its tributaries, the Ulfenbach drains the area of the Überwald towards the Neckar . It is sparsely populated and densely wooded.

fauna

The Ulfenbachtal is one of the four areas in Germany where the protected Aesculapian snake lives. The population has grown rapidly in recent years, with some animals penetrating into the houses.
