The Protestant St. Peter's Church in Heddesbach in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg was built in the 13th century. It received its current appearance in 1777.

history

The settlement of Heddesbach began on behalf of the Bishop of Worms, presumably in the late 12th century by the Lords of Steinach , whose local branch was called Lords of Harfenberg after the previously built Harfenburg . It was probably still the Harfenbergers who founded St. Peter's Church in the 13th century. The mother church was Neckarsteinach . The Heddesbacher Peterskirche was also responsible for Langenthal and later sending parish for Brombach and Unter-Schönmattenwag .

In 1496 the church was described in the Worms Synodale , a visit report of the parishes in the diocese of Worms . At this time the Landschad von Steinach , probably as heirs of the Harfenbergs, held the church authority. The Steinachers as supporters of the Lutheran creed introduced the Reformation relatively early in the 16th century . In 1777 a new nave was built and the tower was given an onion dome. During work in the choir, old frescoes were discovered in 1910. In 2008 the Peterskirche was renovated.

description

The chancel with paintings from the 15th century

The Peterskirche stands in the center of Heddesbach on a spur above the Ulfenbachtal . The east-facing choir tower church is one of the few medieval fortified churches in the Odenwald. The Gothic choir tower was built in the 13th century. The bell house and onion dome date from 1777, as does the baroque nave. The choir has a ribbed vault , the keystone shows a hand with the Worms key. The nave has a mirror vault . Until 1858 the walled square around St. Peter's Church was used as a cemetery. Two tombstones from the 19th century have been preserved.

The exposed paintings in the choir, which date from the 15th century, are remarkable. They show saints, evangelists and scenes from salvation history. The pulpit dates from the baroque period. A grave slab behind the altar is adorned with the initials BL, Bligger Landschad is mentioned in the Worms Synodal 1496. The organ was built in 1804 by Anton Overmann for the church in Graben . Mathias Burkhard transferred her to Heddesbach in 1874. The instrument has 16 registers on a manual and pedal .
