features
The head is slightly stretched in front. The eyes are pigmented red. The labial palps are very long, curved and scaled. The fore wings are narrow and lanceolate. The apex is elongated and tapering to a point. The forewings have a yellowish to reddish basic color and are more or less clearly marked with bands or spots. The hind wings are very narrow and elongated.
In the males, the tegumen is wide, slightly arched and dorsally provided with a reinforcing crest. The right half is larger than the left. The brachia are well sclerotized and slightly curved. The right brachium is about one and a half times as long as the left. The blades are simple, spatulate to long and narrow. The Valvellae are strongly asymmetrical. The left valve is long and slim, the right one is only rudimentary or completely absent. The aedeagus is very short. It tapers distally , behind it has a sclerotized ring that is often flange-shaped. The manica is very long, tapers distally, and often has a curved tip. The lateral lobes of the 8th segment are rounded or oblong.
In females, the apophyses posteriores are slightly longer than the apophyses anteriores . The ostium is very small and is surrounded by a sclerotized rim. The sterigma is slightly asymmetrical. The ductus bursae is long and narrow. The corpus bursae is oval or oblong and provided with two differently sized signs and often with rows of small sclerotized platelets.
distribution
The representatives of the genus are native to the Palearctic and Africa . The distribution area extends in Europe in the north only to Central Europe .
biology
The caterpillars live in the flower baskets of the Asteraceae . There they eat the seeds or prey on other insects.
Systematics
In Europe the genus Pyroderces is represented with six species. The following list of species is based on the World catalog of cosmopterigid moths compiled by Sinev in 2002 and additional species have been added. The type species of the genus is Pyroderces goldeggiella Herrich-Schäffer , 1853 (= Pyroderces argyrogrammos ( Zeller , 1847)).
