The Cosmopteriginae are a subfamily of the magnificent butterflies (Cosmopterigidae). It includes around 1350 species in 80 genera worldwide.

features

The subfamily is defined by three convergent and one polymorphic features. The former include: the slightly sclerotized or mesially open vinculum , the asymmetrical genitalia of the males and the presence of comb teeth on the antennae . The polymorphic feature are the veins Rs and M1 on the hind wings, which are either stalked or formed separately.

The first abdomen segment of the caterpillars has two or three subventral bristles, the third to sixth abdomen segment usually has three, rarely four to 10 subventral bristles, the ninth abdomen segment has a subdorsal bristle that is either bristly or hair-shaped. In addition, bristles L1 / L2 are aligned almost horizontally to almost vertically on the first to eighth abdominal segment. The claws of the abdominal legs are arranged in a uni- or biordinal circle, whereby the circle can sometimes be open to the side. The doll is extremely compact to very slim. On the third thoracic segment , the legs are usually not exposed distally.

Way of life and systematics

The caterpillars are miners , live in leaves or plant galls that are spun together , drill in trunks and roots, feed on seeds or as scavengers or live aquatic on at least 26 different plant families, such as on Asteraceaen , Cyperaceaen , Fabaceaen , Pandanaceaen , Poaceaen , Rosaceaen , Typhaceae or Zamiaceae . The most important genres include:
