Gottlieb August Herrich-Schäffer

Gottlieb August Wilhelm Herrich- Schäffer (born December 17, 1799 in Regensburg ; † April 14, 1874 there ) was a physician , city doctor in Regensburg, district court doctor and well-known entomologist .

Live and act

During his studies in Erlangen he became a member of the Bubenreuther fraternity in the winter semester of 1818/19 . From 1833 he served as town doctor, worked as Stadtgerichts- and county court physician in Regensburg, where in addition to his brother, the practitioner Carl Herrich, also in 1836 elected mayor Gottlieb Thon-Dittmer as Bubenreuth were among the leading circle of National Liberals in the city . In 1846 Herrich-Schäffer founded the zoological-mineralogical association in Regensburg and became known outside of Regensburg with a correspondence sheet . In 1871 he was made an honorary citizen of the city.

Gottlieb August Herrich-Schäffer also collected and sold insects, especially butterflies (Lepidoptera). Parts of his collection went to the Zoological Museum Berlin via Otto Staudinger and to the Zoological State Collection in Munich via MJ Bastelberger . Many microlepidoptera in the collection went to the British Museum (Natural History) via Ottmar Hofmann .

From 1861 to 1871 he was chairman of the Regensburg Botanical Society . In 1864 Herrich-Schäffer was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In addition to his continuation of Panzer's "Fauna insectorum Germaniae" , (Heft 111-190, Regensburg 1830-1844) he wrote a "Nomenclator entomologicus" , (Thl. 1 and 2, Regensburg 1835-1840), the "Systematic processing of butterflies from Europe ” (Volume 1–6 with copper, Regensburg 1843–1856) and continued “ Die bug-like insects ” by Carl Wilhelm Hahn (Volume 4–9, Nuremberg 1839–1853).
