Wilhelm Heß (zoologist)

Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Heß (also Hess * November 3, 1841 in Verden ; † June 6, 1918 in Hanover ) was a German botanist and zoologist .

Life

Wilhelm Heß was the son of the chief tax inspector Friedrich Heß (* 1791) and his wife Julie, née Weßberge (1802–1888). The hydraulic engineer August Heß (1827-1894) was his brother.

William Hess studied at the Georg-August-University of Goettingen and was at Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein in Göttingen in 1864 with his thesis Contributions to the knowledge of the decapod crabs eastern Australia for Dr. phil. PhD. Hess initially worked as a teacher in Hanover and Northeim before he accepted a position as a teacher for zoology and botany at the Royal Polytechnic in Hanover in 1874 . In 1878 he was awarded the title of professor. From 1882 to 1890 he held lectures on botany and zoology at the veterinary school and was also a part-time scientific assistant teacher at the secondary school from 1874 to 1908.

Wilhelm Heß worked for the General German Biography (ADB), for which he wrote numerous biographies.

Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Hess was elected a member ( registration number 2963 ) of the Leopoldina on September 26, 1892 .
