The Stettiner Entomologische Zeitung was a scientific journal for entomology ( entomology ). It appeared from 1840 to 1944, with the shorter title Entomologische Zeitung until 1911 .

In the course of the 19th century, entomology took off. As the first entomological association in Germany, the Entomological Association of Stettin was founded in the Pomeranian provincial capital Stettin in 1837 .

From 1840 the association published the Entomologische Zeitung. The first volume had a print run of around 500 copies and was dedicated to the President of the Pomeranian Province, Wilhelm von Bonin , who had taken over the protectorate of the association and provided it with public funding. The magazine was shaped in the 19th century by the long-time president of the association, Carl August Dohrn .

The journal primarily published scientific articles, including numerous first descriptions of species and genera . The magazine was not limited to the insects found in Germany; contributions on the insect fauna on Ceylon , China , Mexico and Siberia were published as early as the 1850s .

The vast majority of the articles are published in German, only a few in French and Italian. In many cases, contributions by foreign employees were translated into German instead. In the first descriptions, however, the formal so-called diagnosis was, as is common practice, in Latin until 1905, and sometimes even later. With a view to the international distribution of the magazine, it was set in Antiqua from the start , not in Fraktur .

For the publication of longer articles, the association also published the journal Linnaea entomologica from 1846 to 1866 .

The publication of the Szczecin Entomological Newspaper was delayed during the First World War . In the 1920s, lack of money forced the magazine to appear at times with only a reduced number of pages. In 1923 the association transferred its library to the city of Szczecin; in return, the city was to provide an annual printing subsidy for the Entomological Newspaper, which was temporarily canceled. During the Second World War , the years 1942 to 1944 could only appear to a limited extent. The last contribution published in 1944 was observations on the butterfly life in winter in western and southern France .

After the Second World War, Szczecin came to Poland . With the escape and expulsion of the Szczecin people, the activities of the Entomological Association in Szczecin and with it the Szczecin Entomological Newspaper ended.
