Pyroderces wolschrijni is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cosmopterigidae (Cosmopterigidae). The species was named after the lepidopterist Jacques Wolschrijn, who collected most of the material used to describe it.

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 11 millimeters. The head is white on the forehead ( frons ) and crown ( vertex ). The neck tuft and the neck collar are reddish brown. The antennae are dark gray and have a white line in front that extends from the base to 1/3 of the antennae length. They are lightly serrated in the apical half. The base of the antennae ( scapus ) has a clear white line in front and a white line dorsally . There is a narrow, white ring at the base. The labial palps are white. The first segment is very short, the second is three quarters as long as the third and has a brownish gray subapical ring. The third segment is dark gray ventrally and apically.

Thorax and tegulae are reddish brown and mixed with gray in front. The legs are dark gray. The femurs of the middle and hind legs have white-gray lines. The tibiae have subbasal, medial and subapical white rings, the spurs are white.

The forewings are reddish brown and have a narrow gray costal line that extends from the base to the apex . The costal wing half is strongly mixed with gray from the base up to 2/5 of the fore wing length. A narrow, whitish subcostal line running very diagonally outwards extends from 1/5 of the fore wing length to the anal fold. It is indistinct and lined with dark gray on both sides or completely speckled with gray. An irregular, dark gray spot is on and below the anal fold. It is about half the length of the forewing and does not extend to the inner edge of the wing. It has a narrow white border on the inside and a wide white border on the outside. The apical half of the forewings is darkened in the middle by an indistinct and irregular gray line. At the apex it is surrounded by some whitish scales on both sides . The fringed scales are reddish brown at the apex, they become ocher gray towards the inner edge of the wing. Costal and dorsal to the wing tip are two dark gray lines on the fringed scales. The dorsal line is narrower and more indistinct. The proportion of gray on the forewing is variable. In some specimens, the indistinct white line may be heavily mottled gray or completely gray.

The hind wings are pale gray and tinted ocher towards the apex. The fringed scales are ocher gray. The abdomen is ocher gray. The segments are brightly banded at the back and white at the front. The anal tuft is ocher-colored dorsally and white ventrally.

In males, the tegumen is almost square. The right brachium is curved. It tapers slightly distally and has a small hook at the tip. The left brachium is quite strong and curved inward at the tip. The valves are long and narrow and have a basal lobe. The aedeagus is rather slender and pointed. The manica is widest at the base. The middle section is parallel-walled, the apex is curved downwards. The left valvella is straight and very thin. It is half as long as the manica, the right valvella is missing. The very short and thin left valvella in conjunction with the curved tip of the manica is characteristic of the species.

In females, the apophyses posteriores are slightly longer than the apophyses anteriores . The ostium is small and has a sclerotized ring. The ductus bursae is narrow and widens towards the ostium. It is 2/3 as long as the corpus bursae. The upper half of the corpus bursae is bulbous, the lower part is very narrow. At the confluence of the ductus bursae there is a protuberance. The signa consist of two small, round, scaled labels.

distribution

Pyroderces wolschrijni is distributed in Spain , Portugal , Morocco and Malta ( Mellieha , Għadira Nature Reserve , Naxxar , Rabat ).

biology

The biology of the species is unknown. The moths were collected from mid-April to mid-May and from mid-July to mid-October. It is believed that the species produces two generations per year.
