Location of the municipality of Heddesbach in the Rhein-Neckar district | ||
In terms of population, Heddesbach is by far the smallest municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg .
geography
Heddesbach, which belongs to the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region , is located in the Ulfenbachtal in the Odenwald . The district extends at a height of 180 to 460 meters and is part of the Neckartal-Odenwald nature park .
The community borders in the north on the Hessian community Wald-Michelbach , in the east on the district Brombach of the city of Eberbach , in the south on the district Langenthal in the Hessian city Hirschhorn (Neckar) , in the southwest on the district Altneudorf in the city of Schönau and in the west Heiligkreuzsteinach .
history
Settlement of the area probably did not begin until the end of the 12th century. On behalf of the Bishop of Worms , Bligger III. von Steinach established the Harfenburg and founded the line of the Lords of Harfenberg . With the decline of the Harfenbergs after 1300, the Electoral Palatinate acquired the castle together with the local rule over the settlement, which is first mentioned in 1322 as Heddesbach . The place was administered from Heiligkreuzsteinach, ecclesiastically it initially belonged to Neckarsteinach . The Heddesbacher Kirche was the mother church for the branches in Langenthal, Brombach and Schönmattenwang.
After moving to Baden in 1803, Heddesbach became independent in 1810. It belonged to the district of Heidelberg . During the municipality reform in Baden-Württemberg, the place became part of the newly formed Rhein-Neckar district, in which Heddesbach has been the smallest independent municipality in terms of population since 1975.

The community belongs to the community administration association Schönau with seat in Schönau .
Municipal council
In addition to the presiding mayor, the municipal council consists of eight members who are directly elected every five years. In the 2019 municipal council elections, the only list to stand up was a voters' association that won all eight seats (voter turnout: 68.1%).
mayor
In 2019, Volker Reibold (independent) was elected mayor of Heddesbach. He replaced Hermann Roth (non-party), who in 2015 replaced Herwig Klein (non-party), who had been in office since 1985.
coat of arms
The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In red a silver harp.
The coat of arms was worked out in 1911 by the General State Archives. It alludes to the Landschad von Steinach , who wielded the harp in their coat of arms. The municipality accepted the coat of arms, but initially did not want to purchase a new seal. That is why it has only been used since a municipal council resolution from 1950.
Partner municipality
Heddesbach maintains a partnership with Obernberg am Brenner in Austria.
Culture and sights
Heddesbach attracts with its natural environment, many forest hiking trails and offers space for various sporting activities. In addition, there is an above-average club life. The streets and canals in the historic town center, some of which date from the first years of the 20th century, were renovated in 2004. The church square redesigned in 1986, including St. Peter's Church and Elfnerhaus, is also located in the center of the town. The Elfnerhaus was acquired by the community and serves as the venue for the annual Heddesbacher Kirchweih (Kerwe). It also houses a youth room.
The Protestant St. Peter's Church was laid out as a fortified church in the 13th century . The choir tower dates from this time. In the 18th century the nave and the onion hood were added. The frescoes in the choir date from the 15th century and were painted over during the iconoclasm in 1556. They were rediscovered and restored in the 20th century. The church is equipped with an Overmann organ from 1804 and a baroque pulpit.
The school and town hall was built in 1904 in Art Nouveau style and is a listed building. The elementary school was closed in 1972 and the building is now also used as a community center.
Only sparse remains of the Harfenburg have survived . It was probably built in the 12th century and was one of the oldest castles in the southern Odenwald. It was the headquarters of the Harfenberger and ruled the villages of Heddesbach, Brombach and Langenthal. With the decline of the Harfenbergs, the castle fell to the Electoral Palatinate around 1300, which it pledged to the Lords of Hirschhorn in 1314 . In 1340 Engelhard von Hirschhorn was asked by the Count Palatine to repair the "great damage" he had done to the castle. It is not clear whether this happened. From the 15th century the castle is only mentioned as a field name.
The menhir, which was probably set in the 14th century on the border with Brombach, is classified as a natural monument.
