Leutersbach and Lenzenbach flow into the Steinach and the Eiterbach in the main town in the district, which extends 220 to 584 meters above sea level. The highest point in the district, the boot height , is also the highest point in the Rhein-Neckar district .
Neighboring communities
The community borders in the north on the Hessian communities Gorxheimertal , Abtsteinach and Wald-Michelbach , in the east on Heddesbach , in the south on the town of Schönau and Wilhelmsfeld , and in the west on the towns of Schriesheim and Weinheim .
Community structure
The community consists of seven districts: Heiligkreuzsteinach, Eiterbach (with a boot hut), Vorderheubach (with a sheep farm), Hinterheubach , Lampenhain , Bärsbach and Hilsenhain . The municipal area is 1961 hectares, of which 1500 hectares are covered with forest. Almost 1,600 of the approximately 2,600 inhabitants live in the main town.
history
Until the 17th century
The villages in the higher elevations of the southern Odenwald did not emerge as Waldhufendörfer until the 12th century . The first written mention of Heiligkreuzsteinach and Bärsbach comes from 1293, followed by Eiterbach and Lampenhain in 1316. The places were clearing settlements that were created by the lords of Hirschberg-Strahlberg in their lordship of Waldeck around Waldeck Castle, which they built in the 13th century . As early as 1200 a small Romanesque parish church was built for the settlements on a rocky promontory above the Steinach, which was consecrated to the Holy Cross and thus gave the today's capital its name: "Heilig-Kreuz- (above) Steinach". Together with Waldeck Castle, located in Vorderheubach, Heiligkreuzsteinach developed into the main and judicial center for the surrounding villages. The Waldeck estate was pledged many times, even after it was acquired by the Electoral Palatinate in 1357 and administered as the " Waldeck Winery ". It was not until 1525 that the area was under the direct sovereignty of the Electoral Palatinate for a long time.
When the Reformation was introduced in the Electoral Palatinate in the middle of the 16th century, the parish church in Heiligkreuzsteinach was also redesigned for Protestant worship. In the course of the re-Catholicization at the end of the 17th century, it fell back to the Catholic community. The still existing Reformed community built a wooden makeshift church and in the middle of the 18th century built the church on Steinachbrücke, which still exists today.
18th and 19th centuries
After the devastation of the Thirty Years' War and the Palatinate War of Succession , the population grew rapidly from the middle of the 18th century. By 1875 the population doubled to 976. However, the majority of the population were poor smallholders with very little land ownership or day laborers, who often sought their fortune by emigrating to North America. The ancestors of the American President Dwight D. Eisenhower were among the emigrants . The spelling of the name was then Eisenhauer .
As a result of the political reorganization of Southwest Germany by Napoleon I. In 1803 Heiligkreuzsteinach and the surrounding villages belonged to the Grand Duchy of Baden . In 1828 Eiterbach tried to become independent and gained some rights such as its own board of directors. But it remained a suburb of Heiligkreuzsteinach. In 1830 Heiligkreuzsteinach received the market rights that still exist today. In 1840 the so-called Obergemeinde, to which Lampenhain, Bärsbach, Vorderheubach and Hilsenhain belonged, was separated from the main town.
20th century
In 1935 Hinterheubach was incorporated into Lampenhain. Eiterbach was fully incorporated into Heiligkreuzsteinach again. With the dissolution of the district of Heidelberg in 1973, the places became part of the new Rhein-Neckar district . Today's community was created on January 1, 1975 through the union of the communities Lampenhain and Heiligkreuzsteinach. The municipality Heiligkreuzsteinach previously included the core town Heiligkreuzsteinach as well as the places "Hohenöd, Siedlung" and the district Eiterbach . The hamlets Bärsbach , Hilsenhain and Vorderheubach , the homestead Hinterheubach and the houses Haumühle and Schafhof belonged to the community of Lampenhain .

coat of arms
The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In a divided shield above in red a floating, straight-armed golden paw cross, at the bottom diagonally roughened in silver and blue.
The coat of arms goes back to a seal from 1636. The diamonds symbolize the Palatinate. The cross stands for the Holy Cross patronage of the parish church. The colors of the upper half come from the coat of arms of the Lords of Strahlberg. At the suggestion of the General State Archives, the municipality adopted the coat of arms in 1901. With the municipal reform in 1975 it lost its validity. However, since the symbols also have expressiveness for Lampenhain, it was re-awarded unchanged for the common location in 1977 by the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis district office.
The flag is blue and white and was also awarded in 1977.
