About this picture

It belongs to the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar . Audio file / audio sample

geography

Location and neighboring communities

The municipality belongs to the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and is located on the Neckar alluvial cone in the Upper Rhine Plain , only a few kilometers southwest of the Odenwald elevations and directly on the federal motorway 5 , which separates Eppelheim from the Heidelberg district of Pfaffengrund.

The urban area is almost completely surrounded by the Heidelberg urban district , so Eppelheim borders the districts of Wieblingen in the north, Pfaffengrund in the east and Kirchheim in the south. In the west lies the municipality of Plankstadt, which belongs to the Rhein-Neckar district .

With Mannheim is located about 20 kilometers northwest another regional center of the Rhine-Neckar .

City structure

The homestead Birkighöfe belongs to the town of Eppelheim.

For reasons of orientation, various urban areas are often referred to according to their location in relation to Landesstrasse 543 (Hauptstrasse and Schwetzinger Strasse), which crosses the city from east to west , with the corresponding points of the compass (e.g. northeast Eppelheim), but there is no precise delimitation .

history

Archaeological finds from the Neolithic , the Bronze Age , the Iron Age , the Roman Age and the Early Middle Ages suggest that the present-day urban area was inhabited by humans from an early age. Eppelheim was first mentioned in a document in 770 in connection with a donation in the Lorsch Codex under the name Ebbelenheim .

Eppelheim with the old town center in red

From the 11th century, Eppelheim was a typical small village in the Electoral Palatinate . The power of the Count Palatine included blood jurisdiction , military sovereignty and tax law (the so-called signs of high authorities ). The Palatinate Central Court in Kirchheim was responsible . The lower authority was the village itself: this included the local court, which carried a seal from which the municipal coat of arms was developed in 1895.

The population remained below 150 until the 18th century. One reason for this was that Eppelheim was burned down by French troops on January 28, 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession .

Population development in Eppelheim

As a result, Eppelheim was rebuilt and experienced a steady increase in population, in the 20th century even a population explosion. The population rose from 2,644 in 1905 to 13,904 in 1997.

1803 Eppelheim became Baden.

As part of a district and community area reform , the Rhein-Neckar district replaced the Heidelberg district on January 1, 1973 . As a result, Eppelheim, like the independent community of Ziegelhausen, was to become a district of Heidelberg , against which the residents vehemently and ultimately successfully defended themselves. The good infrastructure and the good economic situation of the community also contributed to the prevention of incorporation.

In 1998, Eppelheim was elevated to a town by the state of Baden-Württemberg.

In 2007, the suggestion of Mayor Mörlein received supraregional attention to pay the newly levied tuition fees from the students if they accept charitable work amounting to 60 hours per semester.

coat of arms

The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In red, a blue orb with gold fittings and a gold clover leaf cross.

It was adopted in 1900 and goes back to a court seal from 1699 on which the eppelheim mark was depicted. Possibly it refers to the folk etymological interpretation of the place name of “Eppel” or “Apples”. A connection with the heart shield of the Electoral Palatinate, in which the imperial orb referred to the electoral dignity of the Count Palatine near Rhine , is improbable . The flag is yellow and red and was awarded by the Ministry of the Interior in 1959.

Religions

Pauluskirche
Joseph's Church

As in the whole of the Electoral Palatinate , the Reformation was introduced in Eppelheim by Elector Ottheinrich and Eppelheim was thus Protestant . The Eppelheimer Pauluskirche in the Hauptstrasse, inaugurated on March 22nd, 1812 belongs to the church district Südliche Kurpfalz of the Evangelical Church in Baden . The oldest part of today's church, the tower portal, dates from the 2nd half of the 15th century. In the church there is the Michael window created by Harry MacLean in 1953 as well as “Jesus, the Good Shepherd” and “Outpouring of the Holy Spirit”. The two pictures "The Creation" and "Feeding in the Desert" for the new parish hall were handed over in September 1993, just a few months before his death. The Protestant parish received the original drafts of these works on permanent loan .

In 1876, however, the Catholics also got a house of worship again, the Josephskirche . Today, however, this is only used occasionally, as the main church of the Catholic parish of St. Joseph is the Christ the King Church on Rudolf-Wild-Straße. Since 2006, the parish belonging to the Archdiocese of Freiburg with the parishes of St. Marien im Pfaffengrund and St. Bartholomäus in Wieblingen has formed the pastoral care unit Christophorus (formerly Heidelberg-West ) in the Dean's Office Heidelberg-Weinheim .

After the Second World War, the consecration of bells in 1948 by Pastors Gottlob Hees and Josef Ott was a milestone for the town and the two parishes. The two parishes had agreed on the sound of the bells.

In the total population, the Protestants continue to make up the majority with 5,187 citizens, while 4,537 are Catholic and 4,412 belong to other religions or are non-denominational.

In the region, Eppelheim is still known today as a bricklayer village, as an above-average number of Eppelheimers have been bricklayers since the end of the 19th century . In 1903 there were around 500 bricklayers, not least because of the building boom that began in neighboring Heidelberg in 1870.

As in the entire northern Baden region, tobacco was also grown in Eppelheim for centuries .

The largest employers in the city are the Rudolf-Wild-Werke in the south with around 1,400 jobs. In addition, the company is an important factor for the city budget due to its trade tax payments .

Eppelheim has been supplied with gas by the city of Heidelberg since 1908 and with electricity since 1922.

Since 1989 Stadtwerke Heidelberg has been supplying drinking water to Eppelheim as a supplement to its own waterworks. From 2002 the entire management of the Eppelheim drinking water supply was taken over from there, initially for three years.
