The hay cart race is an old Italian competition ( Palio ) that is carried out with hay carts or handcarts .

history

The hay cart race originated in Montebelluna , north of Padua in Italy. The market square is very high on a mountain, and in the event of an attack, the residents had to be there very quickly with their supplies to seek shelter. The merchants had to get their goods up the hill the fastest every weekend in order to get the best sales point. This symbolizes the hay cart race, today called Europalio . The Palio in Montebelluna lasts five days, and all eleven parts of the city compete against each other.

Eppelheim

Eppelheim's twin town Dammarie-les-Lys in France had invited to Montebullana for the hay cart race in 1998. Since then, a hay cart race has been held annually on the third weekend in July in Eppelheim , west of Heidelberg in north-west Baden-Württemberg , during the city festival Happy Eppelheim . It replaced the earlier city run and is now called the Eppelheim Rally . The route runs 800 m through several sand obstacles around the Eppelheim water tower . The cart can be pulled and pushed to the destination as quickly as possible by only four people using muscle power. There is a separate race for children with smaller handcarts . The motto is: "Pull in front, push back!"

Much

In Much , North Rhine-Westphalia , northeast of Bonn , a hay cart race takes place every two years in spring as part of the hay eater competition . For this purpose, the wagons, which are pushed and pulled by a maximum of five people, are built by themselves and the floor area must not be larger than 1.40 m × 2 m.
