The Eppelheim water tower supplied Eppelheim with water for 76 years and is the city's landmark .
history
On March 3, 1907, after almost a year of construction , the water tower was handed over to the community. The builder was Anton Stephan , whose likeness can be seen on the front of the Art Nouveau building at 71 Hauptstrasse . Along with the water tower , the same company built the old waterworks with its deep wells in the west of Eppelheim; today it houses the Altes Wasserwerk youth center .
“The water tower will be built in not that long; currently work is being carried out on the suspicion (...) The construction work was only awarded to the Eppelheim company Stephan and Schneider in June 1906. "
Both buildings were built using a uniform brick construction with a sandstone base . From 1902 to 1905 the sewer system and the waterworks with pumping station were built, thus replacing the well water supply.
From 1907 to 1948, coal was used to generate gas in the old waterworks, which was used to drive the piston pumps . In 1928 an additional electric pump with 15 l / s was installed, in 1946 two more centrifugal pumps with 25 l / s and 15 l / s respectively followed to pump the water and transport it to the local network and to the tower.
In 1976 a huge storm raged over Eppelheim and the surrounding area. The top of the water tower was bent and had to be rebuilt. On October 1, 1990, the local council voted unanimously for the urgently needed repair work to be carried out on the community's landmark. From August 31, 1993 to March 31, 1994, the water tower was renovated inside and out for 1.3 million DM.
In 1910 the flow rate of water was 55,951 m³ with 2,776 inhabitants. 80 years later, in 1990, the annual consumption was around 791,739 m³ with 13,382 inhabitants. The water tower was shut down on April 27, 1983 and renovated from August 31, 1993 to March 31, 1994, in time for the 100th anniversary.
