He was active in both styles and between 1964 and 1972 he won the German championship eight more times, four times in the free and four times in the Greco-Roman. Style. In the course of his career he started for KSV Schriesheim , ASV Eppelheim , AC Ziegelhausen , AV Freiburg-St.Georgen , AV Reilingen and KSV Malsch .

On the international wrestling stage he made his debut in 1964 at the big wrestling tournament that takes place annually in Klippan, Sweden, with a 4th place in the Greek style in the welterweight division. He started in 1968 and 1972 at the Olympic Games in Mexico City and Munich , respectively , but could not place in the front field there.

The best result in an international championship he achieved at the European Championships in 1967 in Istanbul in free style in the middleweight division. He missed there after two victories over the Czech Josef Urban u. the Yugoslav Arslan Rizvari and a draw against Günther Bauch from Halle because of a defeat against the Romanian Francisc Balla just about the medal ranks and came in 4th place.

Ernst Knoll also frequently represented the German Wrestling Federation in the international matches that were still popular at the time and achieved some notable victories.

Ernst Knoll, who was a trained machine fitter, ran his own metalworking shop in Eppelheim until his untimely death.
