René Schiermeyer (born September 27, 1938 in Mulhouse ) is a former French wrestler and bronze medalist at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in the Greco-Roman style welterweight.

Career

René Schiermeyer grew up in Schlettstadt / Alsace . He started there as a teenager with rings and developed into one of the best French wrestler in the 1960s. In 1956 he was the first French champion in the junior Greco-Roman style welterweight. In 1959 he made a lasting impression on the international wrestling mat when he finished second in a middleweight tournament in Savona behind the Turkish Olympic champion Mithat Bayrak , but ahead of the German vice world champion from 1958 Horst Hess . Before that, he had already participated in the 1958 World Championships in Budapest in the middleweight division, but had to pay hardship there. As luck would have it, in his fights he met both German representatives, Horst Heß from Dortmund and Lothar Metz from Rostock , to whom he lost and ended up in 13th place.

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , René Schiermeyer celebrated the greatest success of his career in welterweight. He won the bronze medal there with three wins and one draw against the strong Italian Franco Benedetti .

In the next few years René started regularly at the world championships, but could not win any more medals. The 7th place at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and 7th place at the 1962 World Cup in Toledo / USA were the best results he achieved.

René also played a good role at the Mediterranean Games in 1959 and 1963, where he won medals.

After the Olympic Games in 1964, René Schiermeyer ended his international wrestling career.
