Günther Maritschnigg (born November 7, 1933 in Bochum ; † January 22, 2013 ) was a German wrestler and silver medalist at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome .

Career

Günther Maritschnigg began as a teenager during strength sports club Brambauer with the rings . The trained machine fitter later switched to the strength sports club Westerfilde and then to the Bundesliga club Sportunion Witten - Annen . Günther wrestled mainly in the Greco-Roman style. He was a late starter who won his first and only German welterweight championship in 1959 at the age of 26. A short but successful international wrestling career followed, which resulted in winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 in the welterweight, Greco-Roman. Style culminated. For these games Günther had won the all-German Olympic team by winning the elimination tournaments before Alfred Tischendorf from Jena u. Werner Hoppe from Köllerbach qualified.

For winning the silver medal, he was awarded the silver laurel leaf by the Federal President on December 9, 1960.

In Rome he showed excellent fights and deservedly won the silver medal with five victories. In the final, however , he had no chance of winning against Mithat Bayrak from Turkey , who later switched to Maritschnigg's local rival, KSV Witten 07 .

Günther Maritschnigg competed in both styles at the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama . While he came in 7th place in the free style in welterweight, he reached a good fifth place in the Greco-Roman style.

From 1962 Günther Maritschnigg was ousted from the top position in welterweight in Germany by Georg Utz from Kornwestheim and Peter Nettekoven from Duisdorf .
