Otto Schmittner (born May 3, 1934 in Aschaffenburg ; † July 26, 2011 there ) was a German wrestler .

Career

Otto Schmittner grew up in Aschaffenburg and started wrestling there as a teenager at the sports club "Einigkeit" in Damm . The coach, from whom he learned the most, was Philipp Büttner, a member of an old Aschaffenburg wrestling family. Otto Schmittner, who learned the trade of a tailor but later worked for the Deutsche Bundesbahn, had reached the top German class in lightweight as a 20-year-old. He wrestled mainly in the Greco-Roman style , but occasionally also competed in the free style .

His first big success in his wrestling career was the victory at the German junior championship in 1954 in Greco-Roman. Lightweight style from Johann Sommer from Munich . In the same year he was also the German runner-up in the senior class in free style behind Karl Hock from Kirrlach. In the course of his further career he won the title of German master in Greco-Roman in 1955, 1957 and 1961. Lightweight or welterweight style . In 1961 he won ahead of Günther Maritschnigg , the winner of the silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . In addition, he achieved nine other placements among the three best wrestlers, including three in free style.

In 1955 Otto Schmittner won the elimination for the world championship in Greco-Roman. Style that was held in Karlsruhe that year , before the German master of 1954 Heinz Heller from Hof and Johann Sommer. After good preparation by the then national coach Jean Földeák , Otto Schmittner reached 12th place at this world championship. In the first round he scored a shoulder victory over the Austrian Georg Brötzner. In the next round he then had to accept point defeats against Dumitru Cuc from Romania and Grigori Gamarnik from the USSR . It is worth noting, however, that against Gamarnik , who eventually became world champion, he was sure to get the full fighting time of 15 minutes.

In his further career, Otto Schmittner did not play any more at international championships (in the 1950s and 1960s championships were held much less often than today). With his club SV "Einigkeit" Aschaffenburg-Damm he was still German team champion in 1963 and 1964. After his career as a wrestler, Otto Schmittner turned to long-distance running and competed in a few marathons.
