Gottlieb Neumair (born November 14, 1939 in Munich ) is a former German wrestler .

Career

Gottlieb Neumair grew up in Munich - Obermenzing as the son of a butcher's shop owner. He began at an early age in the neighboring district Neuaubing with the rings at the ESV sports fans Neuaubing . Even as a teenager he was very successful. At the age of 13, he took second place in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 40 kg body weight at the German youth championship, in which all young people between the ages of 12 and 18 were allowed to start in one class. A year later he had the same success in free style. From 1954 to 1956 he was then three times in a row German youth champion, alternating in both styles and in different weight classes. In 1956 and 1957 he was also German junior featherweight champion, in 1956 in the Greco-Roman style and in 1957 in the free style.

The successes were not long in coming with the seniors either. 1956 Gottlieb Neumair was German runner-up in featherweight in Greco-Roman style behind his club mate Suha Karman. He then secured his first German championship title in 1958 in the lightweight Greco-Roman style, in which he wrestled exclusively for the next few years. In 1962 another lightweight championship followed.

In 1958 Gottlieb Neumair began his international career at the World Championships in Budapest . He started in the lightweight and achieved two remarkable victories over the strong Eastern Bloc wrestler Dimitar Stojanow from Bulgaria a . Ernest Gondzik from Poland . A draw against the experienced Austrian Bartl Brötzner and a point defeat against Rıza Doğan from Turkey , who became world champion in this tournament, relegated him to 6th place.

In 1959 Gottlieb Neumair fell ill. He had three bowel operations and, according to the doctors, only survived this disease because of his physical constitution that he had acquired through wrestling. After his recovery he resumed training at the end of 1959 and won the all-German elimination for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , wrestling at featherweight, ahead of Klaus Kropka from Leipzig and Helmut Schrenker from Bamberg .

In Rome he first managed a victory over the strong Japanese Masotoshi Takahira. He met the top wrestlers Spas Penew from Bulgaria and Müzahir Sille from Turkey, against whom he lost on points and had to be eliminated. Sille then also became Olympic champion .

After the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, Gottlieb Neumair took part in an international battle trip for the German national team to the Soviet Union . He wrestled there three times and came in all fights against his Soviet opponents Juri Kolupow, Wertali Schitinow and world champion Awtandil Koridze for the full fighting time of 15 minutes, but could not prevent point defeats in these fights.

In 1962 Gottlieb Neumair took part in a world championship for the last time. In Toledo , USA , he came 10th in the lightweight with a remarkable victory over Jan Kuczynski from Poland .

In 1958, 1962 and 1965 Gottlieb Neumair won the German team championship with his club. After the last title win in 1965, he quit wrestling because he couldn't find enough time to train after taking over his parents' business.
