Grigori Alexandrowitsch Gamarnik ( Russian Григорий Александрович Гамарник ; born April 22, 1929 in Kirovohrad ; † April 18, 2018 in the USA ) was a Soviet wrestler . He was world champion in 1955 in the Greco-Roman style in lightweight.

Athletic career

Gamarnik was a member of the Red Army and belonged to the army sports club in Kiev . Grigori wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style and first drew attention to himself in 1951 when he finished 2nd at the Soviet lightweight championships behind Moscow's Vladimir Yegorov and ahead of Shazam Safin . The qualification for the Olympic Games in 1952 and the World Cup in 1953 has not yet made Grigori. In 1955 he was used at the world championship in Karlsruhe in the lightweight. Although he suffered a defeat there in the second round against the Bulgarian Dimitar Stojanow , he was able to convince and win the world title with five wins in his other fights.

In the Olympic qualification for 1956 Grigori failed to Vladimir Rosin . For this reason he was only able to participate in an international championship, the World Championship in Budapest , again in 1958 . There he wrestled a weight class higher in welterweight. He won five more fights, but was defeated in the final by the Turk Kâzım Ayvaz and therefore had to be content with the vice-world title.

In 1960 Grigori made the jump to the Olympic Games. In the meantime, however, he was not as strong as in previous years and arrived in Rome welterweight only to 5th place - after a draw against Mithat Bayrak from Turkey , the gold medal won, and a defeat against Stevan Horvat from Yugoslavia .

After the end of his sporting career, Grigori Gamarnik worked as a wrestling trainer in the Red Army.
