Per Gunnar Börje Berlin (born August 1, 1921 in Södra Sandby , † December 22, 2011 in Landskrona ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was a two-time medalist at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and 1956 in Melbourne .

Career

Per Berlin began as a youth in his hometown Eskilstuna with the local wrestling club "GAK" with the wrestling. He soon developed into an excellent wrestler in both styles. As a result of the Second World War, during which no international championships took place, the international wrestling career for the police officer only began in 1949 at the age of 28. He finished third at the European wrestling championship in Istanbul in the free style welterweight.

The next start in an international championship was at the World Freestyle Championship in Helsinki in 1951 . There Per just missed a medal with a fourth place because he had to retire after two wins due to a defeat in the third fight against the Iranian Abdollah Mojtabavi .

A great success came Per then at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, when he won the silver medal in the free style welterweight. He, William Smith from the USA and Abdollah Mojtabavi defeated each other, so the missing points from the preliminary fights had to be decided. Here Smith was best with three missing points and became Olympic champion , Per won the silver medal with four missing points and Mojtabavi with five missing points the bronze medal.

1953 Per Berlin was also used in the wrestling world championship in Naples in the Greco-Roman style and finished fifth. He was also at the wrestling world championships in free style in Tokyo in 1954 and in Greco-Roman style in Karlsruhe in 1955 , but was unable to win a medal either time.

In 1956, although he was already 35 years old, he was sent from Sweden to the Olympic Games in Melbourne . There he started in both styles. In the Greco-Roman style, he won his second Olympic medal with the bronze medal, while he came fourth in the free style.

Then he ended his international wrestling career.
