Anton Mackowiak

Anton Mackowiak (born September 29, 1922 in Dortmund , † December 22, 2013 ) was a German wrestler .

He belonged to ASV Heros Dortmund all his life . He had already become German youth champion in 1938 and 1939, but was only able to continue his career after the war due to military service in World War II .

He was German welterweight champion in Greco-Roman style in 1950 before Heinrich Nettesheim in Cologne and in 1952 and 1954 before Hans Böse in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim . He was German freestyle champion in 1951 before Nettesheim.

In 1952 he represented Germany at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in both styles in welterweight and came in 9th place. At the 1953 World Championships in Naples , he won over Polivka from Czechoslovakia and Angelberger from Austria and came in 8th place.

The 1955 World Championships in Karlsruhe were the highlight of his career . He wrestled again in the welterweight, Greco-Roman style. After an opening defeat against Marin Belușica from Romania , he beat Cools from the Netherlands , Werner Hoppe from Saarland , Petkoff from Bulgaria , Vargset from Norway and Arsic from Yugoslavia , only to lose narrowly in the final against Vladimir Manejew from the Soviet Union . Winning the silver medal and the title of vice world champion were his reward.

With the ASV Heros Dortmund team, Mackowiak won the title of German team champion seven times from 1949 to 1957.

For his sporting achievements he was on 12./13. Awarded the silver bay leaf in October 1951 .
