Bertil Alexis Nyström (born May 22, 1935 in Gråmanstorp , Skåne ) is a former Swedish wrestler and winner of the bronze medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and vice-world champion in 1961 in Greco-Roman. Welterweight style.

Career

Bertil Nyström comes from Klippan and was one of the first wrestlers from this city, who made it into the Swedish and world elite at the local “Brottning Klub” (wrestling club). This wrestling club developed practically out of nowhere into one of the leading Swedish wrestling clubs in the early 1960s. Bertil concentrated exclusively on the Greco-Roman. Style and was 1953 Swedish junior champion in Greco-Roman. Lightweight style. He won the first Swedish championship title among seniors in 1957 in the welterweight division. At this championship he also defeated the Olympic champion Gustav Freij , who of course was getting on in years.

Bertil made his debut at the international championships at the 1958 World Cup in Budapest . Starting in the welterweight division, he still had to learn the hard way and retired after defeats against two very strong wrestlers, Kazim Ayvaz from Turkey and Stevan Horvat from Yugoslavia , after the second round and finished in 15th place.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he came to a win and a draw against weaker wrestlers, but then lost to Matti Laakso from Finland and the later Olympic champion Mithat Bayrak from Turkey and ended up in 11th place.

In 1962 Bertil was not used at the World Cup. In 1963 he was back in Helsingborg and won the bronze medal with four wins and losses against Rudolf Vesper from Rostock and Anatoli Kolessow from the USSR .

The Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 were the highlight of Bertil Nyström's career . There he managed the feat of remaining undefeated in seven fights and yet winning only three fights. He tied four times, with which he won the bronze medal.

Between 1965 and 1968, Bertil competed four more times in international championships. His best results were two fourth places at the European Championships in Essen in 1966 and in Västerås in 1968 .

As was customary at the time, Bertil also fought a number of international battles. He achieved some respectable results.

Bertil Nyström was a wrestler who was tactically very clever, as shown by his many draws in the fights he played. He was still able to get a draw against wrestlers who were stronger than him through his tactical wrestling.
