Branislav Simić (born March 21, 1935 in Gornja Rogatica , Bačka Topola , Vojvodina ) is a former Yugoslav wrestler .

Career

Branislav Simić grew up in Vojvodina . He started wrestling as a teenager in 1948. In the youth field in Yugoslavia he won all national championship titles in the Greco-Roman style, the style he exclusively wrestled, and was then delegated to the large sports club Proleter Zrenjanin . His coach at the time, Jeno Kracević, led him relatively quickly to the top European class. Already with 18 years he was at the World Championships in 1953 Naples start at middleweight, but had pronounced Lospech, because he had been in the first two rounds against the Olympic champion from 1952 Axel Grönberg of Sweden and the silver medalist from 1952 Kalervo Rauhala from Finland compete and lost both fights. In 1954 he wrestled within an international match BRD - Yugoslavia against Horst Hess from Dortmund and lost just on points. Even in the next few years he could not reap great merits on the international wrestling mats. He failed again and again because of the experienced world class wrestlers Giwi Kartosia from the Soviet Union , Dimitar Dobrew from Bulgaria and György Gurics from Hungary . From 1959 to 1961 he was not seen at all on the international wrestling mats. From 1962 he took part in the international wrestling event again with increasing successes. In 1963 he became vice world champion and in 1964, at the height of his career, even Olympic champion in Tokyo . At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he won another bronze medal in the middleweight division. The German Lothar Metz blocked his way to another gold medal.

Branislav Simić was 1.80 m tall and always started in the middleweight division, whose weight limit was 79 kg until 1961 and 87 kg from 1962. He studied history and was a history professor after his wrestling career. In September 2007 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
