Dawit Gotschajewitsch Tschakwetadze ( Russian Давит Гочаевич Чакветадзе ; Georgian დავით ჩაკვეტაძე ; born October 18, 1992 in Kutaisi , Prov. Imereti , Georgia) is a Russian wrestler of Georgian descent. In 2016 he became Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 85 kg body weight.

Career

Dawit Chakvetadze began wrestling as a teenager in Georgia. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style. The strong 1.85 meter tall athlete starts in the weight class up to 85 kg body weight. His first coach was Levan Kesewadze.

Internationally, he started out for Georgia. In 2009 he took 2nd place at the Junior European Championship (Cadets) in Zrenjanin in the weight class up to 85 kg behind Serkan Aydemir from Turkey. In 2011 he finished 5th in the European Junior Championship (Juniors), which took place again in Zrenjanin, in the weight class up to 84 kg.

Then Dawit Chakwetadze moved to the Russian Wrestling Association. He is now starting for MGFSO Moscow and is being trained by Gogi Koguaschwili and EK Sadichanow. In 2015 he became Russian champion in his weight class and qualified for a start at the 1st European Games in Baku. There he won over Amer Hrustanovic , Austria , Ramsin Azizsir , Germany , Nenad Žugaj , Croatia and Dschan Belenjuk , Belarus, and was thus European champion. It was also used at the World Championships in Las Vegas in September 2015 . After victories over Maksim Manukjan , Armenia and Dorin Constantin Pirvan from Romania, however, he lost in the quarterfinals against Saman Ahmed Tahmasebi from Azerbaijan . Since Tahmasebi then did not reach the final, Dawit Tschakwetadze was eliminated and only came in 10th place.

In 2016 he was again Russian champion in the weight class up to 85 kg in front of old master Alexei Mishin . It was then also launched at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In Rio he was in top form and became Olympic champion with victories over Saman Ahmed Tahmasebi, Habibollah Jomeh Akhlagi , Iran, Denis Kudla , Germany, Viktor Lőrincz , Hungary and Dschan Belenjuk.

In January 2017, Dawit Chakwetadze also won the well-attended “Ivan Poddubny” memorial in Moscow ahead of Robert Kobliashvili , Georgia. At the European Championships 2017 in Novi Sad, he was surprisingly eliminated in the first round after a defeat against Dejan Franjkovic from Serbia and only came in 11th place. He was in better shape at the 2017 World Cup in Paris , defeating Ahmed Mohamed Ibrahim Othman Saad, Egypt, Kristoffer Zakarias Berg, Sweden and Asamat Kustubajew from Kazakhstan. In his semi-final fight against Metehan Başar from Turkey, however, he was handicapped by a knee injury. He lost this fight by 2-4 points. Due to this injury he could not compete for one of the bronze medals against Robert Kobliaschwili and came in 5th place.

In August 2018, Dawit Tschakwetadze took second place behind Bechan Osdojew in the Russian championship in the weight class up to 87 kg. At the European Championships and the World Championships this year he was not used. But he won in advanced tournaments in Sassari and Kragujevac.

At the Russian championship, which took place on January 19, 2019, he won the third Russian championship title. He won ahead of Sosruko Kodzokow and Bechan Osdojew.
