Metehan Başar (born February 19, 1991 ) is a Turkish wrestler . In 2017 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 85 kg and in 2018 in the weight class up to 87 kg body weight.

Career

Metehan Başar started wrestling as a teenager. He belongs to the İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi SK sports club and has been taking part in championships since 2003. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style and was or is trained by Hakki Başar and Yusuf Düzer. He studied sports management at Sakarya Univ. Sports Science School.

In July 2007 he completed his first start in an international championship at the Junior European Championship (Cadets) in Warsaw and won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 85 kg. Until his next appearance at an international championship, it took until July 2010. He started in the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Budapest in the weight class up to 96 kg, but retired after a defeat against Efe Coskun from Germany the first round and only came in 23rd place.

In his last junior year 2011 Metehan Başar was very successful, because he won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 96 kg at both the Junior European Championships in Zrenjanin and the Junior World Championships in Bucharest.

After that he did not appear again on the international wrestling mat until 2014. From this point on, he only started in the weight class up to 85 kg body weight. In July 2014 he became student world champion in Pecs ahead of Nikolai Bajrakow from Bulgaria. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, however, he disappointed, because he lost to Artur Omarow from the Czech Republic in the first round, was eliminated and only came in 25th.

Metehan Başar then won his first medal at a major international championship at the 2015 European Championships, which were held as part of the European Games in Baku . He defeated Mate Sopadze from Georgia and Rasmus Tjoerstad from Norway, then lost to Dschan Belenjuk from Belarus and then beat Attila Tamas from Romania and Maksim Manukjan from Armenia on points. He won a bronze medal with it. However, there was a setback for him three months later at the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas , because he lost there against Ramsin Azizsir from Germany, which meant he was eliminated early and only came in 29th place. He also missed direct qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Metehan Başar also missed the qualification for these games at the tournaments in Zrenjanin and Istanbul in April and May 2016, although he finished in 3rd place there. Because of the IOC's very limited number of participants, he should have at least finished 2nd in one of these tournaments.

2017 turned out to be a successful year for Metehan Başar. First he was runner-up in Novi Sad in May of this year, losing to Viktor Lőrincz from Hungary in the final and then even becoming world champion in Paris in August . He defeated Jawid Hamsatow from Belarus, Nikolai Bajrakow , Robert Kobliaschwili from Georgia, the Olympic champion Dawit Chakwetadze from Russia and in the final battle also Denis Kudla (wrestler) from Germany.

At the 2018 European Championships in Kaspijsk, Metehan Başar lost in the qualification against Tadeusz Michalik from Poland. Since this failed in the next round to Denis Kudla from Germany, he was eliminated and only finished 14th. In contrast, Metehan Başar presented himself in excellent form at the world championship this year in Budapest and was again world champion with five victories in the middleweight class, which has been increased to 87 kg body weight.

At the 2019 European Championships in Bucharest, Metehan Başar won in the weight class up to 87 kg over Dimitrios Tsekeridis, Greece, but lost on points in the next round against Mikalai Stadub from Belarus. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 12th place. In June 2019 he also started in the same weight class at the European Games in Minsk. He lost there in his first fight against Bekchan Osdojew from Russia. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 13th place. Things went even worse for Metehan Başar at the World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) in September 2019. There he lost his first fight against Rustam Assakalov from Uzbekistan. Since this did not reach the final, Metehan Başar was unable to continue in the consolation round. Since he had also not scored a technical point in the fight against Assakalow, he ended up only in 32nd place.

In October 2019, he competed in the World Military Games in Wuhan (China) in the weight class up to 87 kg. He lost there first to Viktor Lörincz, Hungary, then won over Tadeusz Michalik, Poland and Yao, China and lost in the consolation round in the battle for one of the bronze medals against Denis Kudla (wrestler) from Germany.

At the European Championships in Rome in February 2020, Metehan Başar won qualifying over Erik Int, Estonia. He then lost to Semen Novikov from Ukraine. Since this reached the final, he was able to continue wrestling in the consolation round and won it over Jesus Gasca Fresneda, Spain and was defeated in the fight for one of the bronze medals against Alexander Komarov from Russia.
