Maksim Manukjan (born December 10, 1987 ) is an Armenian wrestler . In 2017 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 80 kg body weight.

Career

Maksim Manukjan, who lives in Gyumri and studied in Yerevan , started wrestling in 2000. He has been trained by Aleksander Hovanisjan ever since. He prefers the Greco-Roman style and has been a member of the Armenian national wrestling team since 2013.

Since he was already 26 years old at the time, he is a typical late starter who, after relatively moderate success in the early years of his career, became a very successful wrestler.

At the beginning of his international career in 2013, Maksim Manukjan started in the weight class up to 84 kg (from 2014 up to 85 kg) body weight. In July 2013 he won the silver medal at the Universiade in Kazan behind Alan Chugajew from Russia but ahead of Jawid Hamsatow from Belarus and Dschan Belenjuk from Belarus. He was then used in September 2013 at the World Cup in Budapest and came there after two wins and one defeat against Damian Janikowski from Poland on the 8th place.

In the following years he competed several times in world and European championships. The best result he achieved was a 5th place at the 2015 European Championships, which were held as part of the European Games in Baku. He also had notable victories over Saman Ahmed Tahmasebi from Azerbaijan and Alexander Kazakevic from Lithuania, but lost against Dschan Belenjuk and Metehan Başar from Turkey. At the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas, Maksim Manukjan lost his first fight against Dawit Chakwetadze from Russia and was eliminated and only reached 23rd place. He also missed qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. But he made up for this at the qualification tournament in April 2016 in Ulaan-Baatar with a 2nd place behind Jawid Hamsatow.

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he lost in the first round against Viktor Lőrincz from Hungary. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and finished in 16th place.

At the 2017 European Championships in Novi Sad, Maksim Manukjan started in the weight class up to 85 kg. He won two fights there, but lost in the consolation round against Ramsin Azizsir from Germany and reached 7th place.

Then he decided to train in the weight class up to 80 kg at the 2017 World Championships in Paris. A project that was completely successful, because he won there over Youssef Ahmad Ghaderian from Iran, Alexander Kessidis, Sweden, Pascal Eisele , Germany, Surabi Datunashvili from Georgia and Radzik Kuliew from Belarus and became world champion.

In April 2018, Maksim Manukjan became European champion for the first time in the weight class up to 82 kg in Kaspiysk. On the way to this success he defeated Bozo Starcevic from Croatia, Daniel Tichomirow Alexandrow, Bulgaria, Lázlo Szabo, Hungary and Wiktor Sasunowski , Belarus. At the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, he competed in the same weight class. He surprisingly lost there in the quarterfinals against Emrah Kus from Turkey. Since this reached the final, Maksim Manukjan was able to continue wrestling in the consolation round, in which he won a bronze medal with a victory over Saeid Morad Abdvali from Iran.
