Semen Serhijowytsch Novikow ( Ukrainian Семен Сергійович Новіков ; born December 11, 1997 in Kharkiv ) is a Ukrainian wrestler . In 2020 he became European champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 87 kg body weight.

Career

Semen Novikov, who wrestles only in the Greco-Roman style, appeared on the international wrestling stage for the first time in 2016 when he competed in Macon at the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in the weight class up to 84 kg for the Ukraine. After a victory over Matthias Stéphane Dieda, France and a defeat against Jalgasbay Berdimuratow from Uzbekistan, he finished 9th. He took the same place at the 2017 European Junior Championships in Dortmund in the same style and in the same weight class. In Dortmund he won first over Martin Herman, Czech Republic and then retired after a defeat against Arian Güney, Germany.

After an 8th place at the U23 European Championship 2018 in Istanbul in the weight class up to 87 kg, he triumphed at the U23 World Championship 2018, which was held in Bucharest in November of this year, and won over Mohamed Mostapha Ahmed Metwally, Egypt, Iwan Huklek, Croatia, Islam Abbasow, Azerbaijan and Daniel Gregorich Hechevarria, Cuba U23 world champions.

At the U23 European Championship 2019 in Novi Sad, Semen Novikov lost in the weight class up to 87 kg in the first round against Gurami Chezwiani from Georgia. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only finished in 9th place. In October 2019, Semen Novikow repeated the previous year's title at the U23 World Cup in Budapest. He defeated Alexander Stjepanetic, Sweden, Kumar Sunil, India, Iwan Huklek, Kiril Maskewitsch, Belarus and Gurmai Chezwiani.

In January 2020, Semen Novikow tried his hand at the "Matteo Pellicone" tournament in Rome in the weight class up to 97 kg. He finished 5th with two won fights and two lost fights. In February 2020 he was used by the Ukrainian Wrestling Association at the European Championships in Rome in the weight class up to 87 kg. He won there over Jesus Gasca Fresneda, Spain, the ex-world champion Metehan Başar from Turkey, Alexander Komarow , Russia and Viktor Lőrincz from Hungary and thus became European champion.

Whether Semen Novikov can compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo depends on whether he can prevail against Dschan Belenjuk , his Ukrainian compatriot and reigning world champion in the weight class up to 87 kg body weight.
