Denis Maksymilian Kudla (born December 24, 1994 in Racibórz , Poland ) is a German wrestler . In 2011 he was Junior World Champion (Cadets) and German champion in wrestling in Greco-Roman style. He won the bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . In 2017 he became vice world champion in Paris.

Career

Denis Kudla grew up in Dasing near Augsburg and started wrestling at TSV Aichach at the age of six . His coach at the time was Oguz Özdemir. At the age of eleven he went to the wrestling boarding school in Schifferstadt , which he graduated with secondary school leaving certificate. Since then he has been coached by Markus Scherer and, after becoming a member of the junior national team of the German Wrestling Federation, by Jannis Zamanduridis . In Schifferstadt he now lives with his brother Patryk, who is also a wrestler. After completing an apprenticeship at BASF in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 2015, he became a Bundeswehr soldier and prepared for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Denis Kudla was already very successful in the junior area. In 2010 and 2011 he was German A youth champion and in 2012 also German junior champion. At the German senior championships in 2011, he finished second in welterweight behind Fabian Jänicke from RSV Hansa Frankfurt (Oder) . In March 2012 he succeeded for the first time to become German senior middleweight champion in front of Bastian Kurz from RSV Hansa Frankfurt (Oder) and Eugen Ponomartschuk from SV Wacker Burghausen .

In 2010 Denis Kudla started for the first time at the Junior European Championships for Cadets, which took place in Sarajevo . In the weight class up to 63 kg body weight, however, he still had to pay hardship and only came in 19th place. Just one year later, grown into the weight category to 76 kg body weight, he was far more successful and won in Warsaw in the same age group behind Muchamad Kogitschew from Russia and Lasha Gobadse from Georgia a bronze medal . Just 14 days later, he exceeded this success again at the Junior World Championship (Cadets) in Szombathely , because he became Junior World Champion with five wins. In the decisive battles he defeated Muchamad Kogitschew and Ogushan Mesut Sarisoy from Turkey . In his five fights he only gave a rating against Kogitschew.

In the international competitions of the juniors of the year 2012 he was not as successful as in the cadets in 2011. He finished at the junior European championship in Zagreb in the middleweight division after victories over Vladimir Stankic, Serbia, and Dimitrios Papadopoulos, Greece, and one defeat against Fuad Aliyev, Azerbaijan, 8th place and at the Junior World Championship in September 2012 in Pattaya he lost his first fight against Hoha Hahnidze from Belarus. Since he missed the final, he was eliminated and only came in 22nd place.

In 2013 Denis Kudla became German junior middleweight champion, but had to accept a point defeat in the German men's championship in the semi-finals against Eugen Ponomartschuk from SV Burghausen, so he could only fight for 3rd place. But he got back on the road to success in his second junior year, because at the European Championships in Skopje he won over Zakarias Berg, Sweden, Robert Kobliaschwili, Georgia, Mikola Krisew, Ukraine, Ilya Gulijew, Russia and Dorian Parwan, Romania, the European title. In the Junior World Championship this year he could not take part due to an injury.

At the German men's championship in 2014, Denis Kudla suffered a narrow point defeat in the middleweight final against Eugen Ponomartschuk. At the European Junior Championships in June 2014 in Katowice / Poland, he reached the final, in which he lost just on points against Islam Abbasow from Azerbaijan, the 2013 Junior World Champion (Cadets). Denis Kudla also met Islam Abbasow in the final at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Zagreb, to whom he again lost on points.

In March 2015 Denis Kudla achieved his next major international success in the U 23 age group newly introduced by the World Wrestling Federation. He won the middleweight title in Walbrzych / Poland with victories over Bekchan Osdojew , Russia, Vagharshak Minasjan, Armenia, Islam Abbasow, Nikolai Dobrew, Bulgaria and Wladimir Stankic, Serbia, the European Championship. In 2015 he became German champion for the second time ahead of Jan Fischer from KSV Köllerbach and Ramsin Azizsir from ASV Hof / Saale.

In March 2016, Denis Kudla won a medal at an international championship for the first time at the European Championships in Riga among seniors in the weight class up to 85 kg body weight. He defeated Metehan Başar from Turkey, then lost to reigning world champion Dschan Belenjuk from Ukraine and secured a bronze medal with victories over Kristofer Johansson from Sweden and Laimutis Adomaitis from Lithuania.

In August 2016, he achieved his greatest international success to date at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. After a defeat against the future Olympic champion Dawit Chakwetadze from Russia, he then defeated Habibollah Jomeh Akhlaghi from Iran and Victor Lörincz from Hungary in the consolation round and thus deservedly won an Olympic bronze medal.

At the U-23 European Championship 2017 in Szombathely, Denis Kudla surprisingly lost in the semifinals against Kristoffer Zakarias Berg from Sweden, but then secured a bronze medal with a victory over the Hungarian Erik Szilvassi. He then presented himself in excellent shape at the World Championships in Paris in August 2017 . In the middleweight division he defeated Hou Shuai from China, Daniel Gregorich Hechevarria from Cuba, his "old" rival from junior times Islam Abbasow and the 2017 Asian champion Hossein Ahmad Nouri from Iran. In the final, he then suffered a narrow 1: 2 point defeat against Metehan Başar and became vice world champion.

At the 2018 European Championships in Kaspijsk , Denis Kudla defeated Eerik Aaps, Estonia and Tadeusz Michalik, Poland, in the weight class up to 87 kg, then lost somewhat surprisingly against Bekchan Osdojew from Russia , but then defeated Artur Shahinjan from Armenia and Islam in the consolation round Abbasow each on points and won a bronze medal. At the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Denis Kudla won in the weight class up to 87 kg over Nikolai Dobrew, Bulgaria and Masato Sumi, Japan, but then lost to Rustam Assakalow from Uzbekistan on points (2-5). Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 11th place.

At the European Championships 2019, which took place in Bucharest in April, Denis Kudla met his old rival Islam Abbasov in the first round. At the end of the fight this stood after techn. Points 1: 1, since Abbasow scored his "1" later than Kudla, Abbasow was the point winner. Since Islam Abbasow reached the final, Denis Kudla was able to continue in the consolation round and showed three masterpieces. First he defeated the 2016 Olympic champion Dawit Chakwetadze from Russia on points, then he shouldered the 2017 world champion Maksim Manukjan from Armenia and in the battle for the bronze medal he defeated the strong Belarusian Mikalai Stadub with 3-1 techn. Points, who had previously thrown the double world champion Metehan Başar from the competition. The bronze medal was the reward I deserved.

He was also in good shape at the 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan). He defeated the Egyptian Bulgarians Tarek Mohamed Abdeslam Sheble Mohamed and Amer Hrustanovic, Austria, in the weight class up to 87 kg , but lost in the semifinals against Dschan Belenjuk from the Ukraine with a technical 1: 2. Points. In the battle for one of the bronze medals, he again won over Mikalai Stadub on points.
