List of cities in Russia |
Kaspijsk ( Russian Каспи́йск ), before 1947 Dwigatelstroi ( Двигательстрой ) is a city in the Republic of Dagestan, which belongs to Russia . The city is located 18 km southeast of the republic capital Makhachkala on the west coast of the Caspian Sea . Kaspiysk has 100,129 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010), making it the fourth largest city in Dagestan.
history
Kaspiysk was founded in 1932 and is one of the younger places in Dagestan. The place originally existed as a workers' settlement called Dwigatelstroi , which literally means something like "engine construction". This settlement was built to meet the needs of an engine factory that was built at the same time, which was originally supposed to primarily produce diesel engines for shipbuilding, but was quickly converted into an important armaments manufacturer in the Second World War , which soon broke out .
In 1947, two years after the end of the war, the settlement was given city status and the name Kaspijsk based on its location on the Caspian Sea. In the post-war period, Kaspiysk continued to develop into an industrial location and workers' suburb of Makhachkalas. The population was around 25,200 in 1959 and 49,400 in 1979.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Kaspiysk hit the headlines several times in connection with the first and second Chechnya wars: on November 16, 1996, 68 people were killed in an explosive attack apparently by Chechen terrorists on a predominantly military house in Kaspiysk , and on May 9, 2002, a Victory Day parade attack left 43 dead.
