Magaramkent ( Russian Магарамкент , Lezgian Мегьарамдхуьр ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 6953 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 170 km as the crow flies south-southeast of the republic capital Makhachkala in the eastern part of the Greater Caucasus . It is located not far from the left arm of the Samur River . In the area of ​​the village, about 4 km away, on an island between the two main arms of the river, the state border with Azerbaijan runs .

Magaramkent is the administrative center of the Magaramkentski Rajons and the seat of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Magaramkentski selsowet, which also includes the village of Tagirkent, 3 km to the west. The place is almost exclusively inhabited by Lesgiern .

The founding year of the village is 1801. In 1943 Magaramkent became the administrative seat of the newly created Rajons named after him.

The federal highway R217 Kawkas (formerly M29, also part of the European route 119 ), which runs along the northern edge of the Caucasus and the coast of the Caspian Sea, passes about 5 km northeast of Magaramkent ; The road border crossing to Azerbaijan is not far from here. From the trunk road via Magaramkent to the west in the mountains of Akhty and Rutul Rajon centers leads the Samur up the regional road 82K-016.

The nearest train stations are on the Rostov-on-Don  - Makhachkala - Baku route , almost 30 km north to northeast near the Beliji settlement and near the village of Samur , closer to the Azerbaijani border.
