Kjachulai ( Russian Кяхулай ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 6962 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located about 3 km southwest of the center of the Dagestani capital Makhachkala and a little further from the coast of the Caspian Sea . It is located at the foot of the Tarki-Tau mountain range, which rises steeply to its highest point, Mys Sarijar, at 720  m .

The settlement belongs to the Makhachkala district and is under the administration of the Sovetsky rajon , one of the city's three administrative districts. In the northeast, Kjachulai borders directly on the actual city of Makhachkala, and in the northwest and southeast on the urban-type settlements of Alburikent and Tarki, which are also part of the urban district .

history

The place was first mentioned in the 17th century as the village of Amirchangent , named after a Kumyk prince named Amirchan.

With the growth of the city of Makhachkala in the second half of the 20th century, the place became subordinate to its immediate suburb and the city administration. In February 1988, a large part of the town was destroyed or uninhabitable by a landslide . The homeless residents were settled in an area southwest of Tarki, where the settlement Nowy Kjachulai ("New Kjachulai") was established. In 1992 Kjachulai received urban-type settlement status.

As the de facto outskirts of Makhachkala, Kjachulai is integrated into its local urban transport, which is mainly handled with marshrutki (shared taxis). The nearest train station is Makhachkala on the Rostov-on-Don  - Baku line .
