Belidschi ( Russian Белиджи ; Lezgian Белиж ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan ( Russia ) with 12,236 inhabitants (14 October 2010).

geography

The settlement is a good 140 km south-southeast of the republic capital Makhachkala on the eastern edge of the Greater Caucasus . It is located a little west of the Samur River, not far from its confluence with the Caspian Sea, 6 km away from the village . It is a good 15 km to the state border with Azerbaijan .

Beliji belongs to the Derbentsky Rajon and is located about 25 km south-southeast of its administrative center Derbent . It is the seat and only place of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Beliji. Almost 90% of the population are Lesgier , just under 5% Tabassarans .

history

The place was created from 1899 in connection with the construction of the main line of the North Caucasus Railway from Rostov-on-Don to Baku . The railway station, which went into operation in 1900, and the associated settlement were named after the village of the same name, about 3 km northeast of Beliji , which today forms an independent rural community. In 1965, Beliji received urban-type settlement status.

Beliji is located on the Rostov-on-Don - Makhachkala - Baku railway line that was electrified on this section in 1973 (line kilometers 2436 from Moscow ). The federal highway R217 Kawkas (formerly M29), which also runs along the northern edge of the Caucasus to the Azerbaijani border, passes to the west of the place .
