history
The place was founded in the 1980s as a housing estate for the builders of the Irganai Dam under the name Svetogorsk . In 1985 it received urban-type settlement status. In 1991 the name was changed to Shamilkala ("Shamil City") after Imam Shamil . After the hydropower plant was largely completed in the 2000s (the installation of further turbines is planned depending on economic considerations), the population of the settlement fell significantly.
