Leninkent ( Russian Ленинкент ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan ( Russia ) with 15,532 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

Leninkent is located about 13 km west of the center of the Dagestani capital Makhachkala on the edge of the gradually rising coastal plain of the Caspian Sea . Immediately southwest of the settlement, the first mountain range of the Great Caucasus rises steeply to a good 700  m above sea level.

The settlement is part of the urban district of Makhachkala and the management of the Rajons Kirowski, one of the three administrative districts of the city, assumed.

history

Leninkent came into being in the 1930s as a place of residence for resettlers from the mountainous regions of Dagestan, mainly Kumyken and Avars . The settlement was named after the revolutionary leader Lenin . The place developed slowly until the 1950s. As a suburb of the expanding Makhachkala, it received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1965.

Infrastructure

Two kilometers northeast of Leninkent leads the trunk road R217 (formerly M29, to Makhachkala also part of European route 50 ), which runs along the northern edge of the Caucasus and the coast of the Caspian Sea towards Azerbaijan . Not far from the settlement branches off the regional road 82K-005 (formerly R275) to Buinaksk and further to the central mountain regions of the republic ( Levaschi , Gunib ). There is a “ marshrutka ” connection with Makhachkala .
