Manas ( Russian Мана́с ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 5357 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 30 km as the crow flies south-southeast of the republic capital Makhachkala on the eastern edge of the Greater Caucasus , about 3 km from the coast of the Caspian Sea . It is located on the left bank of the Manasosen River ("Manas River").

Manas belongs to the Karabudachkentski Rajon and is located about 10 km east of its administrative center Karabudachkent . It is the seat and only locality of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Manas. More than half of the inhabitants are Dargins , a good quarter are Kumyken (in the nearby village of Manaskent , on the other hand, mainly Kumyks live).

history

The place arose in connection with the construction of the Rostov-on-Don  - Baku railway line , after the Manas railway station, which belongs to the village of Manaskent located about 2 km to the northeast, was opened there in 1900 . The station settlement and the village have long been a single place. In 1965 it received urban-type settlement status. In the 1990s the original village became independent; both places, urban-type settlement and village, initially continued to bear the same name Manaskent. On May 25, 2005, the settlement was renamed Manas as part of the administrative reform , adapted to the name of the train station.
