List of cities in Russia |
Khassavyurt ( Avar and Russian Хасавю́рт , Chechen Хаси-Эвл ) is a city with 131,187 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia in the republic of Dagestan . It is located in the west of the republic near the border with Chechnya and 82 km from the capital Makhachkala .
history
The place was founded in 1846 as a Russian military base to protect the northern Russian territories from attacks by the Chechens and other rebellious Caucasus peoples. Originally the place name of Kumyk origin was written separately as Chassaw-Yurt , ie "settlement Chassawa". Later the fortress developed as a trading place and was also given a railway connection that still exists today. Since 1931 Khassavyurt has the city status as well as its current name.
Between 1989 and 2009, the city's population increased from 70,000 to over 128,000. The reason for this was the large influx of Chechen refugees from 1995 onwards due to the first and second Chechen wars .
On January 27, 2011, a car bomb exploded outside a café in Khasavyurt, killing four people and injuring six.
