Pauly's main work is the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity in alphabetical order , which he published from 1837 and which was also named after him. Pauly died in 1845 before he could finish his work; Ernst Christian Walz and Wilhelm Siegmund Teuffel took over this for the next seven years. This first edition consisted of six volumes. A second edition was started between 1861 and 1866, but was never completed. (A new edition of the work was obtained from Georg Wissowa , after which it is also called Pauly-Wissowa . A short version of it is Der kleine Pauly , which appeared in five volumes from 1964 to 1975. The encyclopedia was updated and fundamentally revised in 1996 –2003 published under the title Der neue Pauly .)

In addition, the works of Lukian appeared in Pauly's translation from 1827 to 1832 in 15 volumes in the series Greek Prosaiker in new translations .

As a member of the Royal Statistical-Topographical Bureau , August Friedrich Pauly wrote several Oberamt descriptions as part of the Württemberg state description. In 1841 he was made a knight of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .
