Life

The son of a school principal attended the Maria Magdalenen grammar school in Breslau . After graduating from high school in 1895, his financial independence enabled him to study for a long time (from 1895 to 1911) at various universities ( Breslau , Bonn (where he failed his first exam in 1900/1901), Berlin , Leipzig ), which he completed in 1911 with a dissertation on Plutarch graduated from Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . After the state examination (1912) he completed the preparatory service for the higher teaching post. He also supported Wilhelm Crönert from 1912 to 1914 in the revision of Passow's concise dictionary of the Greek language . From April 1, 1914 until his retirement on October 31, 1937, he taught as a senior teacher at the Johannesgymnasium in Breslau .

From 1923 Mittelhaus supported the Breslau professor Wilhelm Kroll in the publication of the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity . After Kroll's death in 1939 he became the sole editor. During the Second World War Mittelhaus brought out six volumes, but with the destruction of the publishing house (1943) the company was seriously endangered. In the winter of 1945 Mittelhaus had to leave Breslau in a hurry and lost his library and all documents from the RE editorial team. He died, completely exhausted, on January 19, 1946 in Jena.
