The town center lies on the Neckar itself, while the new development areas stretch up to the Gleithang of the Neckar Valley. In the north, a narrow strip of territory belongs to the municipality on the right bank and slope of the Neckar. There, viticulture is carried out on a steep slope , which in earlier times was part of the economic basis of the place.

Apart from the village of Benningen there are no other districts.

Neighboring communities

Historical geography

In the municipality of Benningen am Neckar lies the abandoned village of Dudelingen.

history

Early history

Around 85 AD the Neckar became the border of the Roman Empire . To secure the border, the Romans built the so-called Neckar-Odenwald-Limes , which included a fort on the southeast edge of today's village. When choosing the location, the strategic location opposite the mouth of the Mur River probably played a role. Around 150 AD, the border and with it the garrison of the fort was moved to the east in the direction of Murrhardt , but a civilian settlement remained.

Around AD 260, the Alemanni ousted the Romans and settled in the area. The name Benningen is probably derived from the name of the clan leader, who could have been called Bunno.

middle Ages

The place was first mentioned in a document as Bunninga in 779 , when the Fulda monastery received property there. Other landowners were the Lorsch Abbey and the Speyer Monastery . In 1351 and finally in 1497 the place came to Württemberg and belonged to the Marbach office .

Early modern age

In 1579, Simon Studion , the headmaster of the Latin school in neighboring Marbach, discovered Roman remains and carried out excavations. Systematic archaeological excavations of the Roman fort Benningen were carried out by General Eduard von Kallee from the 19th century onwards after the recognition of its military importance . Finds are exhibited around the new town hall today, and a Roman museum has been set up in the town hall itself.

In 1618 a bridge was built over the Neckar near Benningen. This was replaced by a new, covered bridge from 1785 to 1787. This in turn was badly damaged by blasting in 1945 and replaced by the current bridge in the 1950s.

The plague raged in Benningen during the Thirty Years' War . When the French invaded in 1693, when Marbach was set on fire, Benningen also suffered great damage. The construction of the palace and the city of Ludwigsburg meant additional burdens, for example through forced labor and billeting. The village was slow to recover from all these stresses and so many Benningers emigrated to America in the 18th and 19th centuries . From 1718 the newly founded city of Ludwigsburg developed into the new center of the region, and so Benningen was reclassified into the Oberamt Ludwigsburg in 1762 . This assignment persisted even after the Kingdom of Württemberg was founded in 1806 .

From the 19th century

In 1879 the village was connected to the route network of the Württemberg State Railways by the Murrtalbahn . In 1881 a railway connection to Ludwigsburg followed. The railway connection transformed the village into a workers' community and an economic upswing began.

The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the Ludwigsburg district in 1938 . In 1945 the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

On August 10, 1964, the community name was given the addition "am Neckar". During the municipal reform in the 1970s, Benningen remained independent, but has been a member of the Marbach am Neckar municipal administration association since then. Thanks to its convenient location, Benningen developed into a popular place to live; between 1970 and 1994 the population increased by 34%.

On December 18, 2006, the roof structure of the "old wine press" used as a parish hall burned out partially. Property damage of 700,000 euros occurred to the historic building.
